Now that the end APPEARS near (see David Vitter, Larry Craig), we contemplate what happens next.

First, I think this is bad news for “All the Governor’s Men”. Now that Spitzer is no longer going to be running things in Albany, all those reporters that, due to Spitzer’s largesse were running cover on Troopergate may now feel they have nothing to lose. They will not lose access to the Governor, they will not fear retribution from a disgraced former elected official and they might just get up and do their job.

Look for the truth about Troopergate (an Eliot Spitzer directed and controlled smear campaign) to come out in the next 3-5 months. Some will decry this a piling on, after all Spitzer is gone from the public eye. However if it is shown that he used the power of his office to attack political opponents, it may give pause to other politicians and may embolden the press to finally be the gatekeepers they claim to be.

Now the jockeying begins. Michael Bloomberg will most definitely be preparing for a run for Governor in 2010 as will Andrew Cuomo. However I am hoping that soon to be Governor David Paterson can cleanse Albany of the stench of the Spitzer administration and perhaps prove himself deserving of an elected term of his own. He does not deserve the taint of the Spitzer mess and he deserves a completely clean slate.

Besides, there can only be one Governor Steamroller.

Spitzer to Resign Soon; Paterson Set as Successor

Gov. Eliot Spitzer, reeling from revelations that he had been a client of a prostitution ring, will resign today, some of his staff members said they have been told.
